MUSAC: To See-To Reveal. Uses and Representations of the Unexplained

The project To See-To Reveal [Ver-(re)velar] is generated within the cultural context of a region such as Castile and Leon, where the different traditions and references and the presence of various religious manifestations have great importance in the shaping of a contextual identity.

To See-To Reveal aims at showing, analysing and establishing relationships between those religious features (understanding the word religion in its original and radical sense of religare: to unite, to put in contact) and the use of the image and representations of one of the most extreme phenomena of popular religiosity: Mystic raptures, apparitions and spiritism, as well as visionary phenomena, phantasmagoria, trances, etc.

TYIN tegnestue: In Detail

TYIN tegnestue, a young, cooperative architecture practice based in Trondheim, Norway and founded in 2008 by Andreas G. Gjertsen and Yashar Hanstad, belongs to a new generation of architects who take on the challenge of creating small-scale, practical architecture in underprivileged areas around the world. Employing local, untutored builders and native materials and techniques, their architectural projects in Thailand and Indonesia have served as a catalyst for various local communities, who saw their projects as signs of hope and change.

The exhibition aims to show a selection of TYIN’s projects in Southeast Asia and other recent ones in Norway. These projects reflect the four core values of their practice material, structure, detail and human—concepts that materialize in handicraft, recycling, experimentation with found materials and the most practical and logical simplicity. All these ideas are presented in the Showcase Project, where the experimentation done with simple materials during their experience is gathered to create a huge striped collage.

Alberto García-Alix – Shadows of the Wind

This new project by the artist builds a bridge between past and present, following the thread of two bodies of photographic work that he tackled during the eighties and nineties. Materialised in the books Bikers (1993) andLos malheridos, los bien amados, los traidores (1993), these works sum up two of his key interests, motorbikes and portraits, that are still today a source of inspiration, two ways of understanding his reality through photography.

The exhibition follows the artist”s evolution through these two themes in his life and work, tracing a photographic and self-referential journey narrated in the first person. The vintage prints we see in the display cases are a selection of images that preserve time and become objects. The video reproduction of the original books offers a close-up view of the artist”s aesthetics and vision at the time. Finally, the newly produced photographs are a selection of his latest works on the subjects that reveal the subsequent evolution of his gaze.

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN – MUSAC Collection

In 1977 the Sex Pistols launched a single onto the market which included “God Save the Queen”, a song taking its title from the song traditionally used as the national anthem of the United Kingdom. The Pistols’ song was seen at the time as a direct attack to the Queen, and, subsequently, has passed into history as one of the freshest and cheekiest pleas for the liberation from the rigidity of established conventions.

This exhibition through works from MUSAC’s collection it aims to present the strategies of contemporary painting as heir to the previous research carried out in its adaptive evolution, as well as the contagion of its pictorial “essence”—beyond the formal resolution of each work.
